Bolgatty Island - that houses Bolgatty Palace ? presently the Bolgatty Palace Hotel is a tiny piece of land located just 2 km from the city. Bolgatty, the place with the park and palace serves an ideal destination for a day-out with friends and family. The palace was originally built by Dutch traders in 1744 and was leased to the British in 1909. It served as the British residency till 1949. Today, it is a world class heritage hotel owned by the KTDC. It has around 30 suites and cottages for tourists with all modern facilities including a pool. The hotel offers classic panoramic view of the harbor. Special honeymoon cottage for couples are also available. The interior and exterior of the palace has wooden work in classic Kerala architectural style. A horse ride around the exquisite palace resort garden where most of the local trees found in Kerala are grown, boat ride to the nearby tiny islands in boats A nine-hole golf course is also there. The new International Marina is on the eastern side of the Hotel. The marina is the first of its kind in India and has 34 berths for yacht. The marina house, situated close to it has suites, deluxe rooms, multi-cuisine restaurant and health club. It faces straight to the estuary of Vembanad backwaters. Bolgatty Island has a vast bamboo garden. The park can be made a place of get together and the kids-play centre also serves the role of a family hangout site. Bolgatty at night is a real sight when the ancient styled lanterns of the palace and its premises glow, and the boats that sail around like fire flies. You can reach the island by taking a ferry from the High court boat jetty.
