Mattanchery Synagogue

Situated in Mattanchery, the Synagogue was built in 1568 AD.This is the oldest Synagogue among the commonwealth countries.Mattanchery Synagogue has beautiful chandeliers and hand painted yellow patterned floor tiling brought from Canton in the 18th century. The outside view of the Synagogue is nothing spectacular and is set back from the street by a corridor one has to enter first. But the great scrolls of the Old Testament were in themselves worth the visit.

The Mattanchery Synagogue has an 18th century clock tower.On the way to the Mattanchery Synagogue you pass a number of spice shops. This was the port from which spices of all kinds were shipped around the world.The Great Scrolls of the Old Testament, the copper plates in which the grants of privilege made by the Kochi rulers were recorded and the exquisite Chinese hand-painted tiles are of interest. The historic importance of Mattanchery Synagogue can be understood by the fact that, in 1968, the synagogue celebrated its 400th anniversary in a ceremony attended by then P.M Indira Gandhi.The postal department released a stamp to commemorate the event.

Visitors are permitted inside Mattanchery Synagogue between 10.00 AM to 12.00 PM and from 2.00 PM to 5.00 PM.Mattanchery Synagogue remains closed on Sundays and Jewish holidays.
